Two-piece vs three-piece eastern wear

When you are choosing eastern wear online, the most useful question is simple: what is included?

One-piece, two-piece and three-piece labels count the components sold together. They do not guarantee a particular garment. A two-piece is a shirt plus one other component; a three-piece is a shirt plus two others. That extra piece might be a shalwar, pants, a slip or a dupatta, depending on the product.

Start with the composition

At Indigo Studio, the composition on each product page is the detail to check before ordering. It names the pieces in the set.

For example, Chaand Tara is a two-piece with a shirt and shalwar. Midnight Lehrain and Fuchsia pair a shirt with pants. But Virsa and Izmir are two-piece sets made up of a shirt and slip. A two-piece therefore does not necessarily include trousers.

The same applies to three-pieces. Noor-e-Gul and Motia include a shirt, shalwar and slip. Marigold includes a shirt, dupatta and slip. A three-piece does not necessarily include both a bottom and a dupatta.

What is a slip?

A slip is the light layer worn under a shirt. Where it is included, it is named in the product composition alongside the other components. It is not a substitute for trousers, so a shirt-and-slip set is designed to be paired with a bottom you already own.

Choosing a set

If you already have bottoms you enjoy wearing, a one-piece shirt can be a straightforward choice. If you would like a coordinated shirt and bottom, look for a composition that names a shalwar or pants. If a dupatta matters to you, check that it is specifically listed rather than relying on the piece count alone.

The same principle applies to unstitched fabric. Nargis is shirt fabric, while Shab e Noor includes shirt fabric and a dupatta. Marigold Unstitched includes shirt, dupatta and slip fabric. Current shirt pieces are four yards, while the product page gives the component-specific yardage for every set.

A quick check before you order

  1. Read the composition to see each included component.
  2. Check the yardage details where relevant, and confirm fabric details you need.
  3. If you need trousers or a dupatta, make sure they are named in the composition.
  4. For unstitched pieces, plan for tailoring.

Piece count is a useful starting point, but the composition is the answer. Browse Stitched or Unstitched to compare the current options.
